Dolgo Crab Apple

Dolgo Crabapple is a great edible crab apple growing to about 15 feet tall. It produces nice sized crabapples that are a pleasant tart flavor. These are an old time favorite that aren’t seen that much anymore. They can be eaten fresh, made into jelly, used in pies, or added to cider to give an excellent flavor. These seedlings are 10 to 18 inches tall and are hardy from zone 3b to 9a. They are also self pollinating and make an excellent pollinator for other crabapples as well as apples. Many times a crabapple is planted in the middle of an apple orchard and the resulting crops are often heavier due the crabapples excellent pollination abilities. In the crabapple world, Dolgo produces a large crabapple that is a favorite of deer and other wildlife. Probably the best crabapple for deer plantings as well as been quite useful to people.  6-12 inche seedlings.

Sweet Crabapple

Here is a very unique crabapple that is good for both people and wildlife. These trees grow to 20 feet tall with lots of yellow or even green crabapples that are edible fresh, stored or added to cider. These used to be much more widely used since they could be kept well into winter in the ‘olden days’. The also that make an excellent wildlife tree that will draw in birds, deer, and turkey as well as many others. Plants are hardy from zone 4-7 and are 6-12 inches tall. The crabapples themselves are quite tart and make an EXCELLENT addition to apple cider giving it an classic kick in tart crispness. People will often throw a few of these in with regular cider apples…very good. These crabs are native to North America and Deer and other animals seem to have an instinctive draw to these. Some of the crabs also hold on the tree a long time into winter making them very effective feed through fall into winter.

Hardy Ussurian Pear

The Ussurian Pear is the hardiest pear in the world. This Pear will bear fruit throughout all of the Northern United States where other pears struggle to survive and much less set fruit. The fruit is small medium sized, roundish and yellow. The fruit won’t measure up to the Bartlett pear but they are much more hardy and resistant to diseases. They are also prolific flowering trees and are covered every spring with white blossoms. These trees also make an excellent choice for conservation and wildlife plantings. Animals love the pears and will consume the fallen pears quickly. Plants are approx. 12-18 inches tall and will grow to about 25 feet tall. Plants are hardy from zone 3-8.

American Persimmon

The American persimmon is a classic native fruit tree. These trees are native to North America and grow to about 35 to 50 feet tall. The are very ornamental trees with glossy green round leaves. The fruit develops in summer and is orange. Fruits are best left on the tree till frost, which will make the fruits much sweeter. Trees are male or female. Male and female trees needed for pollination. These are impossible to tell the difference when seedlings so to guarantee fruit you should get 3-5 plants unless you already have a persimmon or 2 in your general area. Sometimes plants are self-fruitful but usually not. This characteristic makes persimmons very unusual. This will also pollinate with the Lotus Persimmon that I have listed below. These trees are hardy from zone 4-9. These seedlings are 6-12 inches tall. Law prevents shipment of this plant to California.

Chinese Chestnut

The chestnut blight has devastated the native American Chestnut tree population and very few of them remain in the wild. This is such a shame since the American chestnut was such an excellent tree and the chestnuts were legendary. As I write this there is much research going on to develop a blight resistant American Chestnut but that may be decades away. Fortunately there is now a good replacement for the American Chestnut. It is the Chinese Chestnut. It has a high degree of resistance to the blight and produces nice big chestnuts. The trees don’t get as big as American chestnuts but may grow to 40-50 feet tall and are hardy from zone 40-50 feet. The chestnuts are inside of a spiny husk that splits open as it dries. These are 6-12 inch seedlings. Starts bearing in 3-4 years! No Shipping to CALIFORNIA FLORIDA OREGON WASHINGTON STATE or HAWAII due to destination state regulations.
