Tulip Tree

Tulip tree, Tulip Magnolia, or as it is often called Tulip poplar are same tree. I am not a fan of the term ‘tulip poplar’ because it implies that it is member of the poplar family, which it is not. Tulip tree is a superior tree and is not messy and weak-wooded like most poplars are. Tulip tree can get big to 100 feet tall and specimens reaching 200 feet tall in ideal forest conditions have been recorded. In the typical landscape a size of 60-90 feet tall is about the average. They make good trees where a large tree is needed and grow quickly up to 20 feet in about 6-8 years. They also have great tulip shaped flowers, which are very unique. These trees are hardy from zone 4-9 and these are 12-18 inch seedlings. No Shipments to California or Hawaii.

American Sycamore

American Sycamore Tree is on the most massive growing trees in eastern North America. Until recently the largest tree east of the Mississippi was located near Ashland, Ohio. This tree was a massive old Sycamore that was hundreds of years old. The elements finally got to it but it was a truly magnificent specimen. The most attractive part of this tree is its peeling white bark that is very beautiful especially in winter. These large trees make great trees for large areas and will grow very quickly. This tree also has huge leaves that can be as much as 1 foot or more across. Not a tree for small areas but is great for larger areas. These are hardy from zone 4-9 and these are 12 to18 inch seedlings.

American Beech

American Beech is one of North America’s most beautiful large shade trees. These trees can grow upwards of 80 feet tall with wide spreading crowns. The bark of these trees is an extremely smooth light gray color. These are the ‘I Heart’ trees that you will commonly see initials craved into. The bark is smooth and thin so carving initials into these trees is much easier than other trees. The bark quickly heals over this but the mark is permanently visible on these trees as long as they live and they may live over 150 years. This tree is seldom seen in commerce since it doesn’t transplant well as a large seedling (over 2 foot tall). But these are a perfect size to transplant at 6-12 inches tall. Once established they grow quickly into as very distinctive tree. These are hardy from zone 4-9.

Keep in mind that the nuts of this tree are poisonous to adults, children and most pets. Though they have hard shells, a determined chewer could penetrate this shell. Native animals will eat them with no apparent harm but this is not the case for most pets. They are also very bitter so most things leave them alone but caution should be taken. It is interesting to note that book binders would use the ground up nuts in book binding glue to keep book worms at bay. These are 6-10 inch seedlings.

American Persimmon

The American persimmon is a classic native fruit tree. Plants make excellent shade trees and will not produce fruit if only one is planted. These trees are native to North America and grow to about 35 to 50 feet tall. The are very ornamental trees with glossy green round leaves. The fruit develops in summer and is orange. Fruits are best left on the tree till frost, which will make the fruits much sweeter. Trees are male or female. Male and female trees needed for pollination. These are impossible to tell the difference when seedlings so to guarantee fruit you should get 3-5 plants unless you already have a persimmon or 2 in your general area. Sometimes plants are self-fruitful but usually not. This characteristic makes persimmons very unusual. This will also pollinate with the Lotus Persimmon that I have listed in the fruit tree section. These trees are hardy from zone 4-9. These seedlings are 6-12 inches tall.

The chestnut blight has devastated the native American Chestnut tree population and very few of them remain in the wild. This is such a shame since the American chestnut was such an excellent tree and the chestnuts were legendary. As I write this there is much research going on to develop a blight resistant American Chestnut but that may be decades away. Fortunately there is now a good replacement for the American Chestnut. It is the Chinese Chestnut. It has a high degree of resistance to the blight and produces nice big chestnuts.
